Way cool. I am all for keeping it a secret. As for diving up there. The tides in that area if I remember correctly (I lived up there 2 years) are the 2nd highest in the world after the Bay of Fundy. They actually surf on the incoming tide.

Cook Inlet is not really recreationally diveable. Tides are vicious and the vis is zilch.

Ps I'm pretty sure its not the oldest wreck in America ;)

Yeah, but get this:
"The actual depth of wreck site is still classified by state authorities," Lloyd said. "We have by no means found everything."

An array of objects, from guns, cannons, shoes and plates, are hidden beneath the broad leaves of giant kelp beds...."

That sort of gives a bit of info away - can't be TOO deep!!! Giant kelp beds? I think they're at most 120 feet high.

So get busy finding that thing! :) Just look for kelp! Easy! <HAH>

It says right in the story- oldest American wreck found in the state
There are a lot of wrecks older than 1867 that have been found- several in Lake Superior, plus the Queen Anne's Revenge in Ocracoke harbor.

Maybe around Anchorage you're right, but lower down in the inlet where these guys are it's not that bad and the vis is fine.

I dove with Steve here in Juneau last year He's a good guy!

The video http://community.adn.com/mini_apps/vmix ... S=00000191 suggests fairly shallow. I know Ursa is not tech diving with these guys so, <100ft

Yep, it sure does look shallow. Way too much light for several hundred feet down in AK waters.

Oldest American wreck found in the state, as the flag of the ship, not oldest wreck in America. Read the headline again.

Looks shallow, especially if you consider the shoals in the video. I agree that it shouldn't be widely broadcast in terms of location, and I'm sure Ursa is going to keep her mouth shut regarding the numbers . . .

Okay, I get it now. But seriously, that's just not worded well: "Divers Explore America's Oldest Shipwreck in Alaska."
I understood it as: "Divers in Alaska Explore America's Oldest Shipwreck." [-X

Anyway, it's an old ASS boat! :partyman:

I thought it said "Oldest American Divers Looking to get Wrecked in Alaska," but I didn't really read it very closely.

The pic here would indicate it's not too deep. I don't even see doubles on the diver in the pic.

Looks like a single tank in that pic. CaptJack's video shows everyone using Megs except for one who's on Doubles. No matter what the depth is, its a cool historical find!

In conversations I had with Steve last summer he indicated that it was pretty shallow. Just looking at the bottom I would estimate it to be less than 80 feet probably more like 40'. Kelp like that doesn't grow much deeper and the natural lighting is too good to be any deeper.

If it's that shallow, why hasn't this been found years earlier? #-o
