REEF Online data entry for PNW now functional!!

Post by nwscubamom »

You've been asking for it for years and at long last, it's finally here! Online data entry for our area is now up and running.

If you have old survey forms around that you haven't sent in yet, why not instead enter the data online?

Or if you haven't been surveying because you hate messing with the paper forms, now you won't have to!

Give it a whirl - see what you think!

Oh I can hardly wait! :bounce: Now perhaps I can get off my duff and get my bazillion surveys (hyperbolically speaking, of course) finally turned in. 08 goal is to finally move up Critter ID ladder... about time if you ask me.... ](*,)

I just put in my first one. It is sweet and painless.

Very cool and I think should lead to a way more data for the area.

If you aren't doing REEF surveys, you should be.

just joined This evening Janna
in fact I even posted my first survey from my dive yesterday day at Netarts With Diver Nick
I do have a question for you though
Do you remember when a while back I was all excited about finding a Monkey Faced Eel at Netarts ?
Image

While diving yesterday I found another adult

and I found this juvenile a short distance from the duller in color of the two adults I am assuming the duller one is female
Image

while filling out my survey form I could not figure out how to add the Monkey Faced Eel to my survey Fields do you know how I can do that

I don't even see them listed any place else perhaps I missed them

Sparky, this is GREAT!!!!

We NEED info about the Monkeyface Prickleback in the REEF database. I'm excited about you reporting these.

I was about to give you full details about adding an unlisted species, but I just went in and tested this to tell you how, and found that there's a bug in the Monkeyface Prickleback thing. It's not listed, but when I try to add it in as an unlisted species, it tells me it's a listed species!!

Will report the bug - hold onto your surveys - you can save them for completion later by clicking LOGOUT at the bottom - then you can start where it leaves off later.

Stay tuned!

Is there a way to ensure that someone who finds something (and takes pictures of it) is "believed" even if they're only level 2 or level 1? I'd hate to see Sparky's finding of these to be wasted if he wasn't level 4 or 5.

Forgive me if I'm way off here - I may have misunderstood how much weight is given to level 1 & 2 REEFers.

Doug,

If it was a really odd species for the area, it might raise some questions about the sightings, but since Monkeyface Pricklebacks are known to be found on the Oregon Coast, I don't think there's a problem.

Good question though!

I think ALL data is considered, but more weight is placed on what the expert level surveyors are finding.

hey if nothing else I will just have to get you to come out and make a dive or two with me Janna and you can report them there

I new the there was two adults but did not know they had apparently started breeding they have not been there all that long. so as you might guess i was pretty stoked to find the youngster .

Thanks Janna. I'm glad they're known to be there and that Sparky found them. I'd love to see one too!

The Monkeyface Prickleback and Pygmy Poacher have both now been added to the PNW's unlisted species list on the online data entry program for REEF.

So bug should be fixed now!

Sparky, when you get to the part where all the fish are listed, look on the left hand side at the bottom and click on the link that says Goto Unlisted Species.

Once there, click on the button at the top that says Add another species by name.

Scroll down the list to Monkeyface Prickleback and click on the name

Click on how many you saw (probably Few 2-10)

Click on Save Changes and continue on with your survey.

Hope that helps!
