The Big Guy

Post by dwashbur »

Kathy and I found this guy at Z's Reef yesterday, and he's just too cool not to post. The picture is actually a bit big and the site may clip off some tentacle on the right, but I just can't bring myself to shrink it and lose any of that eye detail. We found a nice pair of wolfies, too, but this guy made my day:

That's great, Dave. :supz:
I love it when you guys do stuff like this. Step 1 - post a cool picture, Step 2 - I follow your link back to your gallery, Step 3 - I find all sorts of little treasures to enjoy.

Thanks!

-Ben

ps - I love how you have your galleries organized so nicely by divesite.

Thanks for the kind words. We love sharing what we find. It takes a certain amount of arrogance to assume one has something worth sharing, but as I've shown before, I have no lack in that department :smt119

Anyway, in that spirit, here's the opposite end of the spectrum, or perhaps "the little guy." We found this nice tubeworm on the same dive, our first ever at Z's Reef. As far as I can recall, we've never come across one with this interesting yellow coloring before.

What kind of camera do you have? Ours are both digital cameras with 2 GB memory cards. I do a bit of editing on most all of our pictures once we get home, mainly using Photoshop. I use it for things like cropping, minor color adjustment, that sort of thing. Photoshop also has a handy little dingfod called a "spot healing tool" that I often use to edit out backscatter, but I don't post many photos that I've done that to. We have them both set to their highest possible image size/resolution, in the case of these pix 2560x1920, and keep both in macro mode virtually all the time. Our motto is "think small." Just to give you an idea of how I end up working with the images, here's a link to the original of the tubeworm picture, which photobucket has automatically resized to 1024x768:

Depending on what camera you have, we'd be glad to try and help you get more mileage out of it if we can.

Oh, nice tubeworm shot! They're so frustrating to me when I have a camera . . . Just about the time I get situated and ready to shoot, they close up.

Yep. The trick with tubeworms is to just keep finding them until you get one to hold still long enough for the picture. Approaching slowly and having the camera ready before the approach is a big factor, too, but the biggest factor in getting pictures like that one is...drum roll, please...dumb luck!
