So coming in from a night dive at cove 2 last week... had a super aggressive little critter running into my buddy and my mask as we were coming up in the shallows. No camera sadly, never seen one before (but I am new to this).
It looks like a worm that is relatively flat, but has little cilia (or something) all around the outside edge which it was using to move all around through the water.
maybe four inches long.
anyone know what i am talking about? it was cool.
worm id?!?
Re: worm id?!?
It is a type of polychaete worm. Impossible to ID much more than that without the worm in hand and under a microscope. They get much bigger than the one you are describing and seem to be attracted to the light.

Yeah, I've been visited by these guys at the end of a night dive before... we saw one about 12 inches long... FAST little buggers... makes you grateful you're in a drysuit!

Yes! Happened to me last year... finishing a night dive at Cove 2. It was pinkish and looked to be about 2.5 or 3 inches long. I was shocked at how fast it moved through the water. It was in the water column at about 12ft. It was zipping all around and struck my mask at least once. It was definitely attracted to the light.hoover wrote:anyone know what i am talking about? it was cool.
