New rock scallop reporting requirement
Just thought I would pop in and give a heads up to all you rock scallop harvesters :burntchef:. Starting in 2013, divers who harvest rock scallops in Oregon waters will be required to report their catch to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife using a free harvest card. Since 1996, ODFW has req...

Re: Westport diving.......
There used to be a dive club in Westport 20 years ago or so. They would have an annual dive to Distruction Island to salvage anchors. They would then sell the anchors and make a lot of money.

Re: Did anyone dive Newport on Friday?
The vis at the fingers looked amazing.... I wished I had brought my gear. ](*,) Sorry I'm slow on this one, I've been busy. I did dive the Fingers Thursday, May 28, and the vis was 15 to 20. You are right to kick yourself for not bringing your gear. It doesn't get much better than that in the summe...

Hi Ann,
Welcome! I've heard several of your reports and look forward to hearing more, especially now that I know you are a diver. I would love it if you came down to the Oregon Coast to dive. I'll have to come up with a good story idea so you can count it as business.

After using any kind of abrasive on a tank it needs to be hydroed. So add a few more dollars to your sand blasting bill.defied wrote:I've got two bottles that are clear coated that have been getting salt inside of them (The clear coat, that is). When I can, I'm gonna go get them blasted for $25 a pop.

Re: A fun week of diving the Oregon Coast
That's one thing about diving the Oregon coast, you usually have the place to yourself. Last Saturday I saw two other teams of divers at The Fingers. It was the first time I've run into someone else diving there. Let me know when you're doing Barview and I'll try and join you. Tuesday my wife and I ...

OK, even though I'm a professional word nerd I had to look up phlegmatic. All of you phlegmatics, raise your hand. The rest of you, step away from the dive gear. The Phlegmatic:: Is deliberative; slow in making decisions; perhaps overcautious in minor matters. Is indifferent to external affairs. Is ...

Re: A fun week of diving the Oregon Coast
Hey Bob, I'd love to go diving with you and show you some spots on the Oregon Coast. To answer your question, I submitted a report on diving the Oregon Coast that will appear today or tomorrow on the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's Web site under the Recreation Report. (It might be here und...

Re: Seahurst Park
Back in the day this was a nice dive. When the barge was still around you had lots of life: octos, wolf eels, clouds of rockfish and the barge was covered in invertebrates. But the last time I dove it was 28 years ago, so what do I know. Maybe they should do at Seahurst what they did at Saltwater. T...

We went without one in Lincoln County for four or five years, although the Marina Store will fill tanks, but only to 3000. Still it was great to have a place to get air.Tangfish wrote:Nothing like having a good LDS in your area.

Sounds like a great referral having such great customer service. What town is this shop located in? South Beach Scuba is 4909 S. Coast Highway, suite 305, South Beach, OR 97366, 541-867-4944. The shop's a little hard to find because it's off the highway in a storage/business park behind the South B...

Re: A fun week of diving the Oregon Coast
The fingers are very heavily fished by both shore angler and boat anglers. I usually pick up about a pound of lead sinkers and jigs on a dive. What's the difference between catching a fish hook and line or spearing it? Do you eat fish Bassman? They've got to come from somewhere. I also know people. ...

Great service from South Beach Scuba
I think Scott at South Beach Scuba is doing a good job. Monday afternoon my brother and I went into Scott's new shop for a fill. I told him that we were planning to dive every day this week. On Tuesday I got an email from him saying he would be closed on Wednesday and offered to lend us two of his t...

My bro was here all last week and we dove The Fingers on Yaquina Bay south jetty five times and Netarts once. My brother is a spearfishing nut and he really liked the fingers. He was almost guaranteed near limits. The weeks total was: 3 ling, 2 greenling, 1 blue and about a dozen black rf. What I le...

Re: Hawaii (Oahu) Diving
Thanks for the report. We're headed to Maui on Mar. 10. I understand the dive boats are a lot cheaper on Oahu. I think we are mostly going to shore dive this year. There are lots of good shore dives on Maui.
I hear there's a lot fewer visitors to Hawaii this year. Was that noticeable?

I actually thought of an application for one of your units in our program. We (ODFW) tag and track the movements of rockfish off the coast of Oregon. To do this we set up an array of transponders in a grid pattern with mooring buoys, anchors ... anyway it's a big pain and we have to pull them during...

My wife and I will be there from March 10 to 20 the first three days in Kehi and the last week in our condo in Kahana. I'd be up for diving with anyone from the club that will be there, although I have a built in dive partner now that my wife is certified.

Re: Got a spare room for a night or two?
Speaking of REEF projects... One that I think would be very timely, considering all the hoopla in Oregon about marine reserves, would be a REEF survey of Oregon's only defacto marine reserve, Whale Cove. It has been a no take area since the mid '80s, is relatively small, somewhat protected, beautifu...

Re: What do you think of the Suunto Vyper 2 computer?
I've had a Suunto Vytec for about three years and love it. My wife is considering buying a Vyper on my recommendation. They are great computers and the fact that they are a little conservative doesn't bother me a bit. One thing you might consider is buying a Vyper instead of a Vyper 2. With the diff...

Going back to one of Fritz's original points, if you really are concerned about marine life populations BUY A Fishing License! You don't have to use it, but fish and wildlife agencies are about the only people working to preserve and protect and conserve fish populations and fish habitats. In Washin...
