Re: Edmonds Oil Dock today (Oct 1st)
Nice pictures... You must have an external strobe set up ?? Thanks - yes, I have an Ikelite DS-125. I do okay with macro, but wide-angle is harder - don't get the kind of visibility that's required often enough for me to get much practice at things like near focus wide-angle etc. The Oil Dock pilin...

Current is going to be moving pretty good right about then.....be carefull. Hrm. Are we talking about the same Edmonds? I planned it for slack, and slack is what I got :) What current station are you using to get slack at 5:30? I didn't predict slack at 5:30, I was planning to get in the water arou...

Re: What's the advantage of a BP?
what the big deal about clear masks, anyway? is there a legit reason to have a black mask over a clear one, or is it just a cool factor? Personal preference. My mask has a black skirt, but I chose it because of the fit, not the color. I do find the black skirt a little better for photography for so...

I love that site Pete-I was planning on tomorrow at about the same time you go today unless the wind kicks up like they said its going to-I have been told not to dive there because of current also & went & had great dives-I do agree the Edmonds area can kick up, I just haven't found the oil...

Thank so much for the Porteau Cove info - seems like a worthy adventure for the rainy/windy months ahead.

Edmonds Oil Dock today (Oct 1st)
Hello - I'm heading down to Edmonds to dive the Oil Dock this afternoon - never been there before. I'm planning to arrive around 5pm and hit the water at 5:30pm. Come join me if you're interested. My name is Pete and my cell number (in case of last minute indecision) is 360-421-1135.

Re: Need Help With Sculpin ID
It has all the identification cues for a male Scalyhead: big cirri between the eyes, big lips, and the one that makes it positive for me is the two spots at the leading edge of the dorsal fin.

Re: Need Help With Sculpin ID
Nice photo. I think your sculpin is a male Scalyhead. How was Porteau Cove? I'm thinking about heading up there to check it out sometime in the next month or two.

Re: Gear to avoid?
As I search the internet there are way too many brands of gear to decide. Being a newbie how am I to know which brands to avoid and which to pursue? I am sure there are certain brands to consider: Scubapro, Mares but which ones should I avoid considering? I am speaking of BCD, Reg, computer, suits....

Re: Mystery fish from Lopez Island
I took this one in Squirrel Cove on Cortes Island in British Columbia. During day time, snorkeling. I don't know what it is, Like Janna's, it is about 2 or so inches long. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/Honza-01/CIMG0305-juv-fish-.jpg Do you think it might be a juvenile Copper Rockfish Jan?

Re: Mystery fish from Lopez Island
Well, that would make the most sense, considering the location. I have seen color variations, but not the distinct white blotches and such like show up in these photos. It's just lighter PS rockfish or darker PS rockfish. Do you have any photos of ones you've seen so we can compare? - Janna I've se...

Re: Mystery fish from Lopez Island
They look like Puget Sound Rockfish to me Janna. They're not always the plain pale color - I've seen them with a darker background coloration and lots of variations on the blotched pattern in your photos.

Nice rufus! It's getting to that time of year again - I've seen a few these past couple of weeks. I wonder if they'll show up in the kind of numbers we saw last winter. I've enjoyed reading your blog - you've taken some really terrific photographs, and it is great to see people getting out to explor...

Re: Diving for NOAA and the NW Straits Commission
Also - if you encounter derelict recreational crab-pots, they ask that you leave them in place but they appreciate divers who ensure the rot-cord has effectively rotted. Some cotton string has a nylon filiment core which effectively locks the trap shut. Moreover, plastic zip-ties are often used to ...

Re: Harness recommendations
Most divers around here seem to use is the 2" HOG harness with 6 D-rings. Infinetly adjustable, comfortable, and with a big price difference. The other argument against the fancy harnesses, is most of them have plastic snaps and buckles. While I've never actually seen one break, they are made ...

Re: dive in south sound area tonight? (09/23)
Wow - the response was underwhelming ;) Nobody had anything to suggest, so I took the easiest option: Cove 2 at Alki. I went out to the buoy and dropped down the line, finned out to check out the I-beams (hoped I'd be lucky enough to spot a six-gill but no joy there - just a big Cabezon), and took s...

Re: Whidbey Island - West Beach
I'm a bit confused by the location you're describing: the West Beach I know of is up by Deception Pass State Park, but it sounds like maybe your friend wants to know about the west side of Whidbey between Admiralty Head and Ebey's Landing. It is a vast flat bottom area consisting of sand/gravel bott...

Re: what fish is this?
Looks like a Juvenile Greenling - possibly a juv Rock Greenling judging by the color of its eye.. Or perhaps it is a Pacific Staghorn Sculpin Janna? :) Just kidding. It is a Whitespotted Greenling - you can tell by the markings and the "skittish" behavior also fits. I think that the white...

Re: Washington Park
Sounds like a nice plan :) For Skyline Wall, I'd suggest the following slacks... 09/25 4:31pm 09/26 5:02pm You'll want to plan to get in at the beach some time before the above (about half your planned dive time). Typically I stand on the beach and watch the kelp bed at the corner of the wall - when...

Re: Washington Park
Burrows Pass (where the Skyline Wall shoredive is) is subject to some pretty significant current. The issue here is that if you don't time it well you may struggle to make your way back to the entry and there really aren't any reasonable alternative exit points. The other two places you can dive in ...
