Very cool. The brine phenomenon appears a bit confused in the writeup. It is well known that when water freezes, the ice that is formed is very pure and the dissolved salts are transferred to the liquid phase, forming the brine.

For what it is worth, be careful mixing chemicals to clean things up. An example of what NOT to do is to use acid and bleach, as it releases chlorine gas which is very unpleasant. Muriatic should work well alone.
