Re: Neah Bay Part 2 (June 18-23)
I shot a big ol greenling last night also... I thought the flesh looked alot like ling.... Kelp greenlings are somewhat closely related to lingcod. Lingcod aren't cod, but in the family Hexagrammidae (Greenlings), so it's not surprising that the meat looks similar, but is surprising to me that the ...

Re: Neah Bay Part 2 (June 18-23)
These guys are funny... *I* am going to win. Btw - shot a greenling last night due to all the "they taste like crap" vs "I think they're great". Conclusion: Very soft flesh, but immediately reminded me of panfish in Wisconsin (Greg said the same). Not fishy, but I don't like real...

Just found out I will be working out of the district in Ft Lauderdale, instead of potentially getting shipped to another area in Florida, which means we can actually start looking for a house!

I'll have to find some way to work this as Greg's parents will be flying in on that following Monday (the 21st), but I already have off that week since they're here... Maybe I can do the entire trip ;) I'll be taking you up on the guest room in Florida Chad, if not just for the wahoo - that's one aw...

"Normal" breathing is about 50/50 incurrent/excurrent, both exchanges being fairly slow. In labored breathing, the intake of water is more prolonged, while water expulsion is done quick and usually more forcefully, and then quickly opening the mouth again to get water moving again across t...

I listened to just the first two thus far... Thanks for posting the links - very interesting. I like the bit covered in the 2nd part - no take for unclassified marine organisms. There is no data whatsoever to support such a thing. I agree and am sympathetic to the fact that there is no data, so we d...

Re: Ling Cod slot limits - how's that working out for ya?
Two sizes to worry about is tough - from a fisheries standpoint, I'd put a max. size limit on it. Who cares if you shot a little ling instead of a big mama? I've mentioned before, the bigger fish is more likely to contribute more to future generations. The only drawback (from a fisheries perspective...

Re: Ling Cod regs
The simple reality is that many people (especially those newer to the sport) find it difficult to gauge the size of a fish underwater, especially when there's not only a minimum size to worry about, but a maximum one also. Most people do their best to estimate, but no matter what there will be fish ...

I'm pretty sure I would have been one of those terrible students that would have undressed you if you had tried to hold me down. Seeing as I thought water was coming in through my reg after I'd taken off my mask (nobody had told me that the cold water might make you breath in unintentionally, and I...

I just don't have that much experience, but when I've been monitoring students for Peter, I try to hover directly above them and maybe a tiny bit behind. That way, if they try to bolt or lose buoyancy control, I'm between them and the surface, and if I start to lose sight of them in silt, a strong ...

How many instructors tell their students what to do if someone else bolts to the surface and the instructor has to leave them? If these are plausible scenarios (and obviously they are, as seen here, and even myself being the 'awesome' pool student that bolted to the surface 3x and never wanted to d...

Or you might just be cueing in a smooth talker. I'll still personally go with recommendations from people who have had the experience with that instructor. I don't know you and never suggested any particular instructor. Just sayin' that if you aren't asking the right questions all that you are goin...

Re: Need instructor for one on one open water certification.
I agree with what you said, but after having talked with quite a few people that are instructors, I would say the majority of them fall in the 'acceptable' category just from talking to them - after all, they are trying to get your business so it wouldn't be in their best interest to be impatient w...

Re: Need instructor for one on one open water certification.
I don't think you can really know how someone teaches by talking to them. But by asking questions, you can find out if they are brusque or patient, and whether they blow off your questions, or attempt to answer them thoroughly. You can find out whether they are organized in how they think, or scatt...

Re: Need instructor for one on one open water certification.
I'd have asked around like I did here and, more probably, just gone with LCF's husband because I know her and the type of diver she is, therefore assuming that her husband would be similar. This is a great example that makes my point. Peter and Lynne are very different. For me, I know hands down (h...

Re: Need instructor for one on one open water certification.
Thanks for the comments everyone. I did send my friend Bob's way! I really wonder about the feasibility of making sure you 'fit' well with the instructor. I mean, how much time do you have to go around and interview all the possible teachers? In theory, that would be great to do first, and maybe som...
