Now we must need David Attenborough to do a voice over!
Seriously, if I were to do a PNW nature documentary, that shot would be in it.

Re: Whidbey Island Critters
So I saw something that looked like this, but green, in Hawaii. I wasn't sure of it was algae or coral because it looked like it had a calcium skeleton or something. Does the coral leaf seaweed use calcium?

I apologize for not showing up. I wound up sleeping through my alarm that morning. I'm also sorry to hear Mongo hurt his back.

Re: First 2013 dive -- Cove 2 tonight
I saw a bunch of new-looking squid jigs, and a cloud of ink while diving at cove 3 recently, so I think someone may have been successfully jigging for squid above me at the time.

Re: Non current sensitive "off the beaten path" dive sites?
Some of the coolest topography I've seen was in Monterey/Carmel with a REEF trip, which I wouldn't have been on if I wasn't into the critter thing. I'm into wrecks and there's no way I'd turn down a cave dive. I'd honestly say there's nothing I don't like about diving, except possibly the part where...

Re: A wing ding deal for new BP/W wannabes
I'm wearing 4lbs with double Worthington 100s and a Bare D6, and I really only use the weight to trim me out a little bit. With a single tank, I only needed about 13 lbs at 500psi with a steel 119. I'm not particularly trim, so my theory is that the graduation dive for my tech class just compressed ...

Re: Non current sensitive "off the beaten path" dive sites?
I don't know if you're bored with EUP yet, but now that I've got doubles, I've been wanting to see how much of the park I can explore on a single dive. Most people stick with jetty way and the pontoon, but there's got to be more to the park than that. I also really like Saltwater state park, surface...

Dive bin
So, not being one of the folks with a truck, I've been carting my loose gear back and forth in a large plastic bin. I've already destroyed one, and the second is on it's last legs, does anyone have specific bin brand recommendations? What sd you folks carry loose gear in?

dphershman's red brotula shot is the ne plus ultra of this particular critter, so in comparison to that, my shot's not that great. http://www.hershman.smugmug.com/Underwater-Photography/Marine-Life-of-the-Pacific/Fishes-of-the-Northwest/3727086_WK6gR4/44/434394716_QHVNy Truthfully though, I'm just h...

Red Brotula at Cove 2
I got a picture of the red brotula at Cove 2, in the pilings along the boundary line at 100 feet or so. It's a terrible picture, but it's the first red brotula I've seen, so there! http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8224/8327718145_0c5f6b2ce4_c.jpg http://www.flickr.com/photos/fnerg/8327718145/in/set-721...

Re: Looking for buddy to practice a couple of drills with
I've had the reg taken from my mouth before, and the thing that kept me from panicking was having practiced reaching for my backup reg thousands of times in my head. Visualization can be a really powerful training tool, and you don't need anything other than time to do it.

So then it wouldn't help enough for the added expense, and you still need to eliminate the dissolved helium with 100% o2 anyway. Got it.

I'll stick with what I've been taught too, but sometimes I start thinking of strange things, some involving pickled herring and bicycle tires.

Re: Would heliox make as good a deco gas as nitrox?
Nitrox 50 still has 50% nitrogen, so nitrogen in your blood diffuses into the breathing gas slower. 50% oxygen and 50% helium has no nitrogen, so maybe you'd offgas as fast as 100% with less risk of toxicity.

The point would just be to lessen the risk of oxygen toxicity from grabbing the wrong bottle.

Would heliox make as good a deco gas as nitrox?
I mean, besides the expense of it. Nitrogen dissolves directly into the blood, instead of binding to hemoglobin, right? So any gas that's not nitrogen, and has the right proportion of oxygen mixed in would work, you'd think. Nobody uses heliox for decompression, so other than the expense are there o...

Re: Saltwater State Park jaunt-12/14
I've had some dives with current, some without. Usually there's not much current at depth, around the big rock piles. The surface swim can be a bit crazy, but you don't need to swim all the way out to the buoys either. I've taken a compass heading, then dropped at 30 feet or so, then just swum the r...
