Current conditions in Tacoma/Seattle area

Post by WylerBear »

Would love to get a current view of the weather/water conditions up in the Sound. I'd like to head up that way tomorrow (Wednesday) for a couple of dives but I'll be diving wet (drysuit is still in the shop) and probably solo (unless someone is interested in meeting me). Don't want to make the 3 hour drive if I can't dive. Will probably head to Redondo, Les D, or Cove 2. Appreciate any current info. Thanks.

Thanks, but I learned long ago not to trust the weather reporting agencies. They are too often wrong. That's why I need some firsthand info. Hopefully from someone who went diving yesterday or today. It's been incredibly windy down here and I hear it has also been up there. Would like to know how or if this has affected our sites. Viz still seemed to be good on Sunday before the latest round of storms. How is it now? Anybody know?

Hi there!

I dove last Saturday - Dalco and Sunrise - and the viz was decent (easily 15-20 feet). However, there has been lots of rain and wind since then. My best guess is that the "surface" layer of any site is fairly mucky with the water turbulence...probably ok once past 10-15 feet (except for those sites with land fresh water run off pipes.....like the one at Redondo).

Wish I could join you to dive but I am tied up in meetings, etc..

Sunnyside was rainy and windy yesterday, but was still very diveable.

I'm looking outside my window in Lakewood and seeing gentle rain but no wind.

As long as things don't storm hard I don't see any reason why you couldn't dive.

FYI, I'm staring out my window at work in to Elliot Bay, and have been spending the last hour watching a nice storm head come in. It may get not pretty here shortly (Just in time for the drive home).

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to stay home and get some stuff done instead. And wait for my drysuit to get back next week. Hate to go another week without diving (it's been 3 weeks!) but the long drive, the iffy conditions, the cold, cold dives, and the long drive home add up to a trip to Costco instead of a trip to the Sound this week.

It was flat, calm and dry last night at Redondo. Couldn't see my feet in the shallows, but, viz was probably at least 20 feet under the pier and stayed that way for the north profile.

My advise.... Go to Costco.
Weather sounds frightful tomorrow. High winds and rain. Depending of wind direction Les Davis and 3 tree are doable as long as the wind is from the south but a north wind bobes ill for all south sound sites. Redondo is bad any time the wind blows especially with rain to get the storm drain going.
