Whats Port Hardy - Browning Pass like in August?

Post by MikeMeagher »

Headed to Port Hardy to dive Browning Pass and the area in early August. Will be spending a few days at the "hide-a-way".

Whats vis like up there during that time of year? Any input is appreciated.

I was there in August 2008 for a week.

The good news is that vis was over 100' ... the bad news is that it rained the whole week and the above-water temps were about the same as the below-water temps ...

I haven't been there in August but staying at the Hideaway was one of my all time favorite Dive trips. I hope you have good weather, but even if you don't, you'll surely have fantastic Diving!

I have seen March with 75 feet of Viz and June with 10 feet of viz. Both were excellent! Browning wall is covered with life and I shoot mostly macro anyway, so the crappy viz didn't ruin my trip. I hope you get 100 feet plus, but I think you'll have a great trip no matter what the viz is. John Bedoeck at the hideaway will make your stay and your dives a great trip! I envy anyone going to dive with him. Have a great trip!

Thanks all for the replies.. yes indeed.. I'm sure we'll have a good time.. great vis or so so vis. I've been in Barkley sound during the summer, where vis was poor the first 40 feet or so then cleared up deeper. Was wondering if similiar happend in PH or not. Will post some video to this website after the trip.

Vis can be variable ... John D told us that if we'd been there two weeks earlier we'd have had above-water temps in the mid-80's and vis in the 25-35 foot range.

I'll take what we got ... less sunshine, cool temps and great vis.

Just wanted to mention the temps so you didn't do like I did and pack strictly for summer weather ... I spent the whole week in my drysuit undergarment. But as others have said, it's a great time and John's a top-shelf host ...
