Lake Union, WWII Minesweeper-Gypsy Queen

Post by Chris Borgen »

This is a WWII Minesweeper/Subchaser we found in Lake Union. It is a wood ship thats 136ft in length, and a beam of 24ft 6 inches. We don't know the number of this ship but it was renamed the Gypsy Queen.

Great looking ship. How deep was this. Although if I remember right an earlier post said that the lake was off limits? Even to freedivers.... I mean snorkelers?

The deepest Lake Union gets is roughly 55ffw. This wreck is in roughly 40ffw. The depth isn't the problem, it's the amount of boat traffic constantly moving overhead, the amount of entanglement hazards, and yes it is illegal without the proper permission to dive, swimming or snorkeling......well to each their own.

Were your dives part of the DNR and Center for Wooden Boats collaboration? More info at the CWB web site.

How does one go about getting clearance to dive in Lake Union? As an old minesweep sailor, including a couple of former YMS's, I would like to dive this wreck. - oldsalt

Honestly? The police don't know much about the old ordinance on their own books. http://clerk.ci.seattle.wa.us/~scripts/ ... tm&r=1&f=G
I have called the marine dispatcher in the past and they gave me verbal permission to dive the AJ Fuller (which is also in a "permit required" area).
