Low 02 in the Hood Canal?

Post by fishb0y »

During our dive at Sund Rock yesterday afternoon, I was able to see around 10 octo. They all seemed to be in distress, I'm guessing the oxygen levels in the canal are getting pretty low again. (Photos stolen from my dive buddy)

From your pics it appears that is true. What was the depth?

Its low down south, not so bad up by Dabob
Hoodsport Buoy data, note about 1.8mg/L O2. Not zero but pretty low, maybe 10% of theroretical saturation.

I had two hour long dives Sunday (1st out to the large wreck to the north; 2nd back to a midpoint on the north wall to recheck something, them out and down to the south).

Octos in every nook and cranny, it seemed. Multiple octos resting out in the open in the shallows (one at 27 feet halfway between north and south walls [just plopped in the middle of some grass, no structure at all around], another at the head of the small boat). Most seemed stressed, but a few did not (even saw a pair mating). Unusually large amounts of fish, and many fish doing some heavy mouth breathing. This was no doubt the reason we saw a number of seals there as well!

I saw one dead fish (large goby) but can't determine how/why it died.

So bittersweet, an opportunity to see so many wonderful creatures, but knowing they are in dire danger. Dammit!

Sounds like you were at Sund Rock? That sux, unfortunately seems to be an annual event with die-off. Hopefully with the rain and windy season it will help instead of make it worse.
