Silo Dive

Post by Bric Martin »

After seeing the DCS film about the missile silo dive I wanted to do it. Today I got my chance and it really exceeded my expectations.

Our guide was Dave from Undersea Adventures. Dave gave us a great dive/safety brief that included a good deal of history of the Titan missile program. We then lowered our gear into a staging area and began to get things set up.
To get to our first silo we had to walk in chest high water through 2 different corridors, a total of about 80 yards. At our descent point there was a platform to stand on at the edge of the silo. I really felt like an adventure moving through the dark corridors to our dive site. I kept thinking about what the initial exploration dives here must have been like.

As we began our drop down the 110 foot silo there were I-beams and steel structure all around. The plumbing, electrical, elevator shaft and steel grating were exposed on all sides. There was plenty to explore. We ended our dive at about 60 minutes with a trip into an equipment room.

Between our dives Dave laid out a nice lunch for us, he was really top notch guide/host. After lunch we did a second dive into a different silo. This second silo had more cool stuff in it. There was a large fuel hose and eyewash station in addition to many areas to poke around in.

I really enjoyed this dive very much. It felt a little bit like an adventure and Dave made it very safe. If you have any interest in this dive look for the DCS film or Mavericks previous trip report for more info.

The water was very clear. On our first dive it remained clear throughout the dive. On our second dive the viz was really bad, there were beds of grass and silt on the bottom. One of the interesting things is that with divers in the silo our movement generated current in the water. I think our group kind of lost our discipline on the second dive and stirred up the bottom. The water was moving up and down the silo, and side to side at the top. I caught myself thinkng about what a bad silt out in a cave or wreck would be like.

yea it is a great dive lots of fun and neat stuff to see.

The second silo they dive has a lot of organic matter and sediments in the water and sitting on everything so just a few bubbles and it dislodges and vis goes to hell fast compared to the other silo. did you have to squeeze around the gate or have they brought in come-alongs and opened it up so you dont have to rip your suit up?

That was one of the areas that I caught myself thinking about the courage the first people that went through must have had. We had a guide tell us how to do it, and a couple of our guys still really had to work to get through.

At 270 lbs I would have never gotten though with a set of doubles. It was hard enough with the rEvo :nutty:

I did this dive last September with Dave and this Recap was spot on what I had experienced. I would also like to add that I dropped a piece of equipment right at the end though the last squeeze through the gate and Dave was great by picking my equipment up the next time he was in there and sending it back up to me.
