I'm just sitting back and chuckling at the fact that this thread and the Les Davis wolfies thread are from the guy who has told me several times that Les Davis is "boring." :smt064 :smt064  :rawlings:

What can I say, Golden dironas aren't gold either they are orange, :dontknow: and white spotted nudi's don't have white spots they are white with black spots #-o . I don't name them I just try to keep up with the names. :der: That's why the scientific types won't use common names they are just to confusing.

But seriously the majority of them do have orange bands at the tips.

Bi-Colored Nudibranch. Yeah, I know that white is not a color, but there you are.

In Andy Lamb's "Marine Life of the Pacific Northwest" they are called appropriately "White and Orange Tipped Nudibranchs"

Works for me =D>

Yes, that's one of the rare times when the scientific name has fewer syllables than the common name, which is why I find it easier just to say Janolus fuscus.

Speaking of which, here's a lovely one we found at Cove 2 yesterday. He appears to be eating that white stuff that we have yet to identify...

The white stuff could be the bacteria that forms on old rotting wood. I forget the name offhand, but you'll usually see it a lot around Titlow or anywhere there are old wooden barges, pilings, etc.

White or Variable Dendronotid?

Post by Tubesnout23 »

Instead of starting a new thread I thought that I could send you this terrible blurred picture of a nudibranch that I am trying to identify to see if you can recognize the beast.

I think it is either the White Dendronotid (Dendronotus Albus) or the Variable Dendronotid (D.Diversicolor)

It's really tough to tell from that picture. The two species are kind of ambiguous in that they both vary allot in color and form. According to Dave Beherns there is even argument that they may be the same species. The best way to determine is to count the rows of cerata which can't be seen in this picture.

For my 2psi I'd go with D. albus but that is just a guess without more info.

Thanks! Eventually I will go back to Admiralty Beach (the site where I saw it) and try to find it again (wish me good luck!) and get a decent picture. My buddy took this one and he was not patient enough to keep snapping until he got a sharp one. Sometimes our little camera has issues such as all at sudden it cannot focus properly anymore and we cannot figure out why! (Unfortunately my regular buddy gets bored and impatient when I take pictures so I may have to find another buddy who has a slow approach to diving and interested in underwater photography too. Do you ever come up to Whidbey Island to dive? )

I do Keystone on occasion but if you really want to do a critter dive come on over to Port Townsend when I am there and you can go as slow as you like!

As for the camera thing. One thing is if you don't have a light on the subject the camera will have problems focusing. Also try putting it in spot focus to force it to focus on the center of the frame. Also try focusing on something a little further away then coming back to your subject.

Let me know when you are planning to dive at Port Townsend in advance so I can book the ferry. I never dived there so I am very interested to see what it looks like. Somebody told me that there is a wreck somewhere that it is not too deep and easy to get to. Thanks for the camera tips.

Yellow or Red?

Post by Tubesnout23 »

I went to Admiralty Beach yesterday but I did not see any Dendronotid but this guy and I am confused by the red on the tip of one of its rhinophores:

Is it a Yellow Margin Dorid or a Nanaimo (Red Gilled) Dorid?

Thanks!
