Post by Dusty2 »

Anybody dive there. Virgin air has a special from Seattle for $69.00 so I'm wondering what the place might be like for a dive destination??

Where they flying into? British or US? I've been to both and might have some lame advice.

Much of those reefs are dead. Some more than others.

Go for it. I live in Puerto Rico and cant get to the USVI for even twice that! Its only 40 miles away!

St Croix has great diving by boat (still very close to shore) and a few great shore dives (north side - cane beach)

Go for it.

No kidding! For that matter, try and buy a ticket anywhere from Seattle for that... you won't come close.

Hmmm... maybe it's a little "too" special, as in too good to be true. Or over. Or....

Heck, come to think of it you could get there for $69 bucks, then take an island hop anywhere in the Caribbean (including Bonaire!) for pretty durn cheap.

I am finding out that Island hoping is not cheap. I can go from San Juan to Tortola and the USVI for about $200 rt. Now figure getting to San Juan adds another $175 rt (or drive and pay for parking/tolls/gas) and it puts me at $375 rt to go about 60 - 80 miles. We wanted to go to the Caymans and we needed to fly to Miami first, $$$

Very true, but if the OP's price is accurate, still alot cheaper from Seattle than the 700 to a grand it takes to get to most Caribbean destinations!

A couple of years ago, we spent a week on a crewed sailboat charter in the BVI. My report of the trip is HERE. The short version is that we had a ball. I do not remember any bleached or dead coral, and thought the profusion of softer invertebrates (soft corals, gorgonians, sea fans, etc.) was beautiful. We did not see big schools of fish, but a satisfactory array of reef species. Viz was good (usually 40 to 60 feet). I'd go back.

I still couldn't find any fares to the Virgin Islands. The name of the airlines is Virgin, but the only destinations I found were continental US sites, and not very many of them.

San Diego, Orange County, and LA were the only one that might have diving. I guess maybe New York and Las Vegas, but, not what I am looking for.

Am I completely missing something?

Sorry guys. I just went by the message that Travelzoo sent me. I have gone to the site and I can't find it either. :crybaby: :crybaby: I guess it was just to good to b true. :angryfire: :angryfire: As far as I can find out they aren't even listed to fly there.

Sorry guys, but I was just curious about what it was like for a dive vacation and didn't really plan on going there so I didn't actually try to book a flight. :dontknow:

Yeah, have been to St. Croix twice and keep going back because the diving is great. Wrecks at 80 to 40 feet so there is a wide variety of areas to explore. Much better than St. Thomas where the coral is dying off. St. Croix has embraced the coral alliance and is bring back their reefs and they are healthy. I have lots of pics to share if you would like. Also have nurse sharks and moray eels that are about 5 feet long.
I heard Girl Diver is sponsoring a trip to St. Croix in october to go and explore the diving down there. Includes staying at a bed and breakfast with 5 days diving through a 5 star PADI instructing center.

If you want more info, you can check me out on scuba.com where I have photos posted from my last trip to the virgin islands.

I was looking at these guys, they had (from Seattle) air/hotel/diving included trips to St Croix starting at $1236.
I would have gone, but there was a damn Ironman going on & the island was booked!!
We`ve dove there before, I thought it was as good or better than Roatan.....
