Going to Kona

Post by Mongodives »

Just found out lastnight that I'm going to the Big Island, Kona coast next Sunday for 8 days.

Anybody been there, and have any recommendations for Dive ops to use?

I've looked at the Manta thread, was looking for more recent than August info.

Well, no advice, but we are going to be there the 28th and 29th, and are going out on the Big Island Divers Manta/Black water dive on the 29th. Maybe we'll meet you while we're there?

probably will meet you there, Big Island Divers is the only dive op that has answered the phone and responded to email so far.

Did the manta/black water pair last year with Big Island divers and they were great - and the dives were truely amazing... highly recommended.

Edit: Oops, that was 3 weeks ago :)

I have used the following in my past three visits to Kona since 1997:

1. Kona Aggressor II liveaboard (the best)
2. Bottom Time Hawaii (good)
3. Honu Sports (average)
4. Jack's Dive Locker (great)

Hey, I just found out I'm going to Kona too ... no idea when, but I won a trip at the Expo.

Now all I gotta do is line up a dive buddy, and accumulate some time off between all the other dive trips I have planned ...

Look up Sockmonkey, he's the Big Island Mastah. Oh, and if you're heading there, any chance you can bring him his NWDC Hoodie and Beanie? :angelblue:

Jesse,

Thanks for letting me drag you around the reef. I'm sorry we didn't get to dive more... but sometimes we experience the rat race even here in the middle of the pacific. I'm sorry about the viz that day. Outside of the winter, that was maybe the worst I've seen it. A couple days later it was back to it's usual 70 or so feet... bummer. And thanks for the coffee... Mmmmm Uptown Espresso.

Please post your photos the mantas you saw and your other dives as soon as you can.

Aloha!

Jesse, did you leave the big island barefoot? They got sticky fingers out there.

Video quality isn't the best. I had to convert the video and lost some clarity. BTW - My wife now says Uptown is the best coffee ever. Now she is making me stop there on my way home :-) Let me know if you ever need more!

Thanks again Eric. I dive in the Puget Sound, the viz looked GREAT :-)

Calvin, everything was fine. Someone did take my dive buddies bamboo mat.
