I'm wondering if anyone remembers Haines Wharf in Meadowdale? It was also known as Labugtens (spelling?) Wharf... The wharf is still there but has been closed for 20+ yrs, the decking is falling apart but the pilings are still intact and the buildings still standing... What I'm wondering is if anyone has tried diving the site? I doubt it's very deep but I would imagine there's a lot of life under there with all that structure available for hiding in...
Anyone?

Surprisingly there is not much life under the wharf at all. Its quite shallow and very dark with only a sandy bottom. At the East most end its still about 15-20 feet deep. Some of the deck that has fallen into the water grows kelp in the summer. If you keep swimming east of the wharf there is sporadic piles of rock and it drops off pretty quickly.
However Burlington-Northern has built a fence to keep people from crossing the railroad and as a result both the Wharf and 100 foot rock are not not accessible from the beach, which sucks. But in general the wharf wasn't the most exciting place to dive.
However I heard that in 2003 or 2004 someone purchased the wharf with the idea of opening it back up and turning it into a boat launch, boat/kayak rental type of a place. But so far nothing has happened and the half of it that sits on wood pilings is falling into the water.

You can scooter it and 100' rock from the city park to the north. Call the ranger and make arrangements to get the gate opened up so you can unload at the tunnel under the tracks.

Thanks for the info... I was kinda hoping for better news but that's the way it goes... Could explain why no one has it in a book or site listing... Whoever bought the old place certainly has their work cut out for the though judging from the pix on google...

Re: Does anyone remember Haines Wharf?
Its in one of the 1980s editions of NW Shore Dives Steve Fischnaller took it out of later editions once the marina folded, Puget Sound filled up with an extra couple million people, and crossing the RR tracks illegally became increasingly dicey. I dove it a few times from shore, not sure its really worth taking a boat there when there are so many bigger attractions closer to the ramps. Scootering from Meadowdale Park (?) could be fun but calling the Ranger (Steve, forget his last name) for access would be a pain if you wanted to make this a regular haunt.Alexitt wrote:Thanks for the info...
