Deception Pass - Sunday, Feb. 13

Post by Grateful Diver »

Diver C and I are thinking to hit Deception Pass on Sunday, Feb. 13. Slack before ebb appears to be around 10 AM.

I've never done this dive, much less planned it. So for those of you with more experience I have two questions ...

1. Am I planning this on the right slack? Seems that you'd want the tail end of a flood, going into an ebb to take you in the right direction(s).

2. What time would you plan to splash? Are there any "corrections" I should know about?

3. Anybody want to join us? I'd be particularly interested in folks who are familiar with the site.

I can't help at all on the planning part but I'd love to tag along with someone who has done it before. I've never been, but have been wanting to for quite a while.

The exchange looks pretty good. The gear hump from the winter closed gate might be a bit excessive. You best check this out first.
According to the website North Beach access is close until April 2.

You'll have to click your way to the calendar if you want to see it for yourself.

Reports vary considerably about ability to get the Ranger to open the gate for access to dive.

The gate is the problem. If I am on island, I would like to join you too.

So...can we get an affirmative for the ranger to open up the gate? What can we do as I would love to do this dive!

The gate is locked for winter, so its not possible, plan it for a boat or charter..

I have a large, heavy duty wagon. Can't we throw the dive gear in it, then walk down to the water pulling it behind us?

Not if you like LONG Long walks down a Long long road ... , it not possible to walk down from the upper gate without killing your self, Mike diesel Dude has tried many many times to get the rangers to open the gate for us, But they refuse, even when this last summer they said they would accomidate us with a group of divers... So your best bet is to PM diesel dude and get his opinoin, Or lets book it as a boat dive and I will be on board for it !!! It should be an easy Book for peeps here on NWDC

I wouldn't mind booking it as a boat dive if there's sufficient interest. That way, too, we can get in a pretty nice second dive somewhere.

Who'd be interested in doing it that way?

3-tankers in February might run a bit short on thermal units ... that's something to keep in mind.

Rich? This was initially you and me, buddy ... what do you think?

FYI it's an easier hike to the North beach from the Bridge than it is from the North beach gate that is locked. Also recomend you drop an 50-60 minutes before slack(9:56am PyD)& If the chart is right, it's going to turn hard & fast & you'll be getting out shortly after predicted slack. I'll hike it if the weather is clear & sunny. Not worth it in the rain.
At one point I had done allot of leg work & shmoozing trying to get the ok to get in during the winter. Everyone said no problem all the way up to the top where I ended up speaking to Ranger Jack Hart who is the park mgr at 360-675-3767
extension 26. Jack gave me a song & dance about limited budget & no manpower to dummy lock a gate for such a small unimportant part that p.s. donates money foolishly to the state park system(I am not bitter-I'm Not I'M NOT,I'M NOT) :boxer:
By all means Bob, give him a call & see if your shmoozing skills exceed mine. Maybe if you can boast a large enough group he'd step up. I'd show rain or shine if I could park at the regular location.
I cant afford a boat trip but look forward to hearing from you all how it went if you go. The tide exchange worries me a little. I'd like to see at least a little dip in there but I have done it went it went wrong & lived to tell about it. It's not that bad & there are lots of good hand holds. From a boat it doesnt matter anyway.
Good luck & keep us posted,
MJ

I have that weekend off, and have long wanted to do the dive. If there is a charter, I'm in. Definitely not up for a long hike hauling gear.

Tidal conditions look good that day. Lu-Jac's Quest (out of Skyline) will take groups there, and they generally dive the north side of Deception Pass (ie, the south side of Pass Island), which is a pretty good section of wall to explore. I think you'll probably want to be in the water around 9:25am, but Capt Phil will want to be there a little early to watch the water.
