2012 favorites
I was inspired to start this by a thread on wetpixel. This is a thread to showcase your favorite photographs from 2012 -- they don't have to be technically the best, but what are your favorites? The wetpixel thread is supposed to be just one, but I didn't want to do that -- just keep it reasonable.
My favorites:
My husband taking our 10 year old grandson on his first "discover scuba" dive on Maui.
Probably my technical favorite for the year, a nudibranch I photographed off Loreto, MX, in June.
I loved the way the lighting in this one came out, and the way the fins frame the fish. Shot off the Sundiver, off Catalina Island in September.
Let's see yours!

Re: 2012 favorites
Normally I chastise anyone who posts more than 2-3 pics in these sorts of things, but I'm going to be a selfish hypocrit this year and post a few more than usual
Top 3 dive photos
Top 3 topside photos
And my favorite photo of the year (a self-portrait )

Since there doesnt seem to be a way to adjust image size, I just have to post a direct link. I dont have a camera, so my pictures are limited to cell phone pics taken topside, but regardless, here is my favorite. It is sunrise at Deception Pass, and the picture doesnt do it justice.

Wow -- there are some AMAZING images here! Keep it up!

Thanks for the thread, Lynne. I'm totally outclassed here, but I'll post a couple of my favs anyways.
RIL on a pinnacle offshore out of Newport, OR
Kind of a lousy pic from a technical standpoint, but it was sure cool seeing this big old Chinook in a 30' hole in the McKenzie River

Great Idea Lynne - isn't this why we dive ? At least some of us

Oh, that baby wolfie on the starfish is utterly splendid, Jan!
Most of us are outclassed by people like Jan and Scott . . . but it doesn't mean we don't have fun taking pictures, and trying to take better ones, and it doesn't mean that our photos don't bring back memories of amazing encounters or just fun times. Keep 'em coming, and share the stories, too!

I think you've figured out the root cause of your problems. Even sea lions get annoyed by splitfin divers silting out their dive sites. Switch back to your jets and you'll be safe from the sea lion silt prevention patrol from now on. - NWbrewer

2012 was a big year for photography for me...I can't play with the big kids in the wide angle category but here's a few of my favorites (even though they're all watermarked 2011 because I forgot to change it):
Octopus at TTN
Stubby squid at TTN - what I really enjoy about this photo is the wide open eye, which took a lot of patience to get without a red focus light...
Gruntie at Flagpole
Redondo is always a favorite topside of course

Best picture of the year for me.
Life can be short and dives even shorter. Time off work will put it all in perspective.

My daughter started diving this year so naturally one of my favorite shots is one of her on our first Daughter/Dad dive. Another favorite is from Cozumel . . . and one from the Canal
Cheers!

Wow -- since the last time I checked in here, there have been so many great photos added that I can't even acknowledge all of them!
But I have to reply to sekhmet -- I have an EPL-1, and I have that camera to thank for my interest in underwater photography. Prior to picking it up, I had limited myself to small P&S's, something I could ignore, and was good enough to speciate animals after the dive. ONE dive with the EPL-1 (in the Red Sea, when Peter shoved it into my hands) and I realized that it wasn't entirely my lack of talent that made for lousy pictures . . . good equipment makes a difference.
And the Olympus 4/3s cameras don't break the bank, either. I think my EPL-1 (bought used) was around $250; the housing was a bit more, and the strobe was the most expensive part of the setup. But as underwater camera equipment goes, this is a relatively inexpensive way to put together a rig with which you can take pictures good enough to be proud to share them.

Those are natural spots on a body of mostly black manta ray, view from the bottom. There is also remora attached and small jack following the ray near its tail.thefeve wrote: Okay Vlad, what is the Ghost mouth on the ray? that is CRAZY cool:) can't figure out whats going on in this picture, but i wanna know!
