Day Island Wall - 12/5 - I know this is late :-)

Post by Scubie Doo »

Sorry this is late, but I have been traveling a ton lately.

Anyway, Penders texted me around 9:00pm on the 5th for a late-night scuba booty call. He said DIW looks good, but we need to splash tonight at 11:45pm. I was on the fence until he said, "and we get to dive the deep wall." I have learned when Penders says DIW looks good, you drop everything and go. Since it was late at night we were extra quiet to make sure we didn't piss anyone off. We hit the water perfectly and had a great 70 minute dive with very little current. We saw some cool critters and I was surprised by a snailfish, I have never seen one at DIW. Here are a few pics.

Have a great weekend.

I've only seen a couple snailfish on DIW, but one was the largest I've ever seen. Never seen squid. The old man with the cataract is great!
Was the place crawling with sailfins? On one night dive it was. For awhile I thought that would be 'normal' but I've never seen that level of abundance again, though I don't dive it a lot at night.

Not many sailfin. The squid was a new find for me as well.

Nice shot's, Scubie!

It had been quite awhile since we'd dove the deep wall to the south of the entry. I setup my camera with my wide angle lens, hoping we'd find bigger critters and decent vis. I've been pushing myself to try more wide angle, and I'm still going through a bit of a learning curve with it. Here's a few shots that I managed.

"Get off my lawn."
Wolf Eel
Wolf Eel
This RIL was huge. Very full of something, I'm betting eggs.
Red Irish Lord

I think this guy was attracted to his image in my dome port. He wasn't going anywhere, let me take several shots, and faced me head-on the whole time.
Opalescent Squid

This guy was missing parts of several arms. Thinking he was lucky to get away from...something.

Decent vis at our safety stop.
Graceful Crab

We came across two different White Spotted Greenlings on this dive. One was definitely guarding eggs. I'm assuming this guy was also. I didn't see him at all initially, as I was focused on getting a shot of the Wolf Eel. Next thing I know, this guy come out of the adjoining hole in the wall, and situated himself where you see him...and never moved. The only time I get a decent shot of one of these is when they are on eggs. Otherwise, they're pretty skittish and keep out of camera range.

Very cool! Great work. WA definitely takes some time. I love diving when someone has macro and someone has WA, it gives two different "feels" for the dive. I really like your crab and RIL. That RIL was huge. Easily the biggest one I've ever seen. That Wolfeel looks like a zombie wolfie :) great shots. Thanks for the late night BC!
