Re: Whew!

Thanks LCF! It was a pretty hectic few days figuring out how I was going to fly!

Bassman- I'll be sure to! I'm working the 7pm-7m shift this week, so I should have some free time on land before I have to work!

Whew!

So this last week has been non stop! I had a GREAT time getting dry suit certified by Peter Guy and doing my open water dives with him and LCF on Tuesday and Wednesday! Thanks so much! I'm definitely hooked on diving dry now! Thursday I went in for my orientation for my new job, and while I was in t...

Re: Getting fish smell out of xtratufs

Because while I could barely smell them, I'm pretty sure the people on the luxury cruise (and my employers!) would think otherwise! :D A girl at the gear shed said her friend's mom had worked in the seafood department at a grocery store and the only thing that got the fish smell off her hands was to...

Re: Getting fish smell out of xtratufs

Extensive scrubbing with Dawn soap, letting them sit for a day while the smell oozed out, and then spending the day covered in toothpaste with baking soda in it seemed to work! Now all I can smell is rubber and toothpaste. At least I know they won't get any cavities!

So this is where the nice weather is!!!

Finally made it back to Seattle, and the temps are almost HALF what they were in Kansas! I'm about to freeze! :D I have a few appointments over the next week (dry suit class with Peter Guy, YAY!!!), but other than that I'm just hanging out in the U District with my old coworkers, maybe heading down ...

Re: What's new in PADI? Buoyancy, BCD removal and tables.

I was OW certified NAUI in 2007, and in pool drills we took all the gear off in a circle in the diving pool at my university (12-15 ft deep), all climbed out, and had to dive down, put on our mask, take a few breaths off the reg, then swim over to the next set of gear until all of us were down there...

Re: Getting fish smell out of xtratufs

They are dipped in liquid neoprene, so they aren't foamy, but the neoprene makes the boots lighter and more flexible in the cold than regular rubber boots. I'll definitely give one of those products a try, where can I find them?

Getting fish smell out of xtratufs

So I know these aren't SCUBA gear, but they are water related, right? I've used mine for the last year working on the fishing boats, and now they are suggested for this cruise company. However, anything that goes on fishing boats comes off smelling rather horrible, and these boots have had their fai...

Re: Building a system around the Canon s100

That is a thought... I'm probably just going to wait for a few months before I do anything now. I wasn't able to sell my car, so I have to budget for another car payment before I get my first paycheck. Grrr. For now I'll either use my little waterproof Fuji XP20 or my Canon with a rain cover over it...

Re: Hey. I'm new here, and live in Seattle.

Small world! I met her in January when she was doing the fish ID tests for NMFS observers 4 day briefings! I asked her about SCUBA in Seattle, and she may have actually pointed me to this site, but my 4 day briefing was a little crazy with the blizzard and then I forgot by the time I got back from A...

Re: Building a system around the Canon s100

An underwater DSLR system was never in the running. I live on boats or out of a suitcase 9+ months of the year, and I don't have the $$$ or space to deal with one. I just want a good camera I can get a long lens for to get better (closer!) pictures of wildlife topside. The deciding factor for me bet...

Re: Check out what's coming through the Locks

I heard there was supposed to be a big meeting between Shell and Greenpeace in Dutch Harbor this summer. USCG was so worried about it they planned to bring in 200 extra cops to try and keep everything in line. Knowing how crazy the bars can get up there normally, I'm rather glad I'm missing all that...

Re: Anybody in Juneau?

I got a job as a deckhand working for Lindblad Expeditions, and yes, they end up in Sitka. Not sure how much free time I'd have to go diving, but hopefully something will work out! I'm very happy to finally be headed back to Alaska! I was up there from January-April this year and have been missing o...

Thanks!

Building a system around the Canon s100

Hey all! My Fuji E900 was stolen out of my car when it was broken into in Seattle in January. I wasn't *too* sad to see it go, as I already had plans to replace it because its formerly excellent battery life fritzed out and it was draining new rechargeable batteries in 10 minutes. (The Ikelite case ...

Anybody in Juneau?

Hey all! I received my final itinerary from my new employer today, so I can finally start making actual plans! After orientation on the 26th in Seattle, I'm flying up to Juneau on the 27th! I sent most of last year in Alaska, but all in Dutch Harbor, and I've never been to Juneau before. If anybody ...

Re: Hello from a traveling nomad!

Ok, I finally have some details nailed down and can commit to something. Sorry it took so long! I didn't want to commit to something and then find out I couldn't make it. I leave in a week and just got my flight details yesterday from my new employer. I was more than a little stressed waiting for th...

Re: Hello from a traveling nomad!

I'm not in a position to buy a dry suit at the moment, so hopefully I can rent one somewhere. I have 3mm boots (most of my dives are tropical!), but I'm planning to buy new ones when I get to Seattle. I just want recommendations first! I also want to get new fins, though I might hold off on that. My...

Re: Hello from a traveling nomad!

Thanks for the welcome!

How much would a private course, and full gear rental cost? I haven't had consistent enough access to diving to justify buying my own gear yet, other than basics mask/fins/snorkel/wetsuit.

Thanks!

Hello from a traveling nomad!

Hello all!! I found this forum while looking for info on dry suit cert classes in Seattle! I'm flying into Seattle the 19th or 20th and I start orientation for my new job as a deckhand with Lindblad Expeditions the 26th. I fly up to Alaska after that, so I'd like to get certified before I go up so i...
