After a second, cursory look at that page, I can tell you that it appears to be some calculus for dialing in an extremely precise measurement of the volume of your tank. It reminds me of the guy who showed up on one of my framing crews with a square that was "accurate to 3 ten-thousandths of a...

Actually, a mouse-over event pops up a help line that says use it "to calculate real capacity" and it appears to be under the stats for the tank itself. That said, it always amazes me that anybody actually understands gibberish like what's on that wikipedia page... Of course, I read 4 dead...

While we're on the subject, maybe one of you math-minded folks can answer another question for me. I track my average gas consumption and such using the SmartTrak software that came with our Aladin Prime computer, but there's one little part in the "Gas/Tank" section that I don't get. It h...

As for the specific topics you mentioned, I've been told that my girls and I have some of the best gas management around, and we didn't take a class. Do you mean gas management or air consumption? Two very different things. Uh, what's the difference? I guess I meant air consumption. This makes the ...

Just my view as an instructor-in-training: In general, it's a good idea to learn stuff like you mentioned in a class setting, because there's always a chance somebody will ask a good question that you or someone else in the class didn't think of. It's also a good way to meet other divers and hook up...

Back on the day after Christmas we found a foot-long Red Irish Lord at Cove 2 who was guarding a mass of eggs; my daughter reached out and gently pushed a Metridium aside so she could get a better picture of him, and he suddenly rose up and nipped her finger. It didn't hurt or damage her glove, but ...

We'll be out there some time, I'm not sure what time but probably around noonish. You can always spot us by the Idaho license plate on the vehicle. We'll have three divers and one snorkeler/shore person.

If safety isn't the paramount factor in what you're doing, stay out of the water ...

Hi Tony,
Sounds like almost all of your dives so far have been training of one sort or another. That is just too cool for words. I fell in love with this sport so much that by the end of this month, I should be a certified NAUI instructor. It does have that effect, eh?

One that my wife does, though I think it's related to regional dialects:

Creek - a small stream of flowing water

Crick - a problem you get in your neck

The kids and I give her no end of grief about this, all in fun of course [-X

With newer divers I see working SAC rates higher than 1 CF per minute routinely ... one of the people you dive with had a working SAC of more than 2 CF per minute when he took my AOW class. He's much ... MUCH ... better now, but you plan for what you have, not what you'll eventually obtain. Sure so...

Honestly, with 44 dives you shouldn't be going to the I-beams. They'll still be there when you have more experience, and to be quite frank... they're not that great anyway. Agreed. We've been there twice, both times with our LP 95's, and both times I came away asking why we bothered. Take your time...

Yeah- one rule of thumb is to not dive deeper than the cubic feet of the tank you have- no deeper than 80' on an AL 80, for example. That said, people break that rule regularly. If you're going to try it, maybe you should agree with your buddy in advance to turn the dive when either one of you hits...

And dwashbur we'd love the tour! Only thing is we usually arrive at our first dive by 9 AM. Perhaps we can do Fox Island West Wall for Dive #1, then meet you guys for dive #2 (and maybe 3!) at Harpers! We can do mornings, it's not a big deal but rather personal preference. If mornings work better f...

we have Harper's Ferry, a great place for macro stuff with nudibranchs galore, really big Great Sculpins, the occasional little octo, a pair of kelp greenlings that live around a sunken trawler, crabs galore - with the possible exception of the GPO and wolf eel, you name it, we've got it. OK, I hav...

Loose-ends Dept.: I haven't found a really good map of Illahee to date; they have a rough one at the LDS in Bremerton that can give you an idea of the layout, but that's all I've come across so far. Harper's is by far the more popular spot over here, and with good reason.

Harper's Ferry Site Description

It's a no-current site. We've run into a mild current once on a massive-exchange day, and even that was a bit of a fluke. You have to climb down about 3 feet of rocks to get to the water, but they're roughly step-shaped and not that difficult. The shore is river-rock stuff; if you've ever been to Sa...
