What did you pick up on your last dive?

Post by DiverChris »

With inspiration from Laura James and crews efforts at Alki as well as the Derelict Fishing Gear removal project, I thought a new thread to encourage cleanup efforts would be cool.

http://www.facebook.com/derelictgear

Here is the question: What did you pick up during your last dive?

I hope this will encourage sharing of cleanup efforts especially of non-controversial things like lead, plastic, and fabric etc. without spawning discussions of underwater "art" and what should or should not be there.

By the way, if your answer includes a disease of any sort, you probably should not share that in an open forum. :)

My answer for today:
Saturday at a park after a Friday night dive at Alki, my 6 year old daughter spotted a sign by a storm drain that read "Puget Sound starts here". She called me over, pointed at the drain and said "Look Dad this is where you went diving last night." I realized she was right and picked up a yogurt wrapper and a old water bottle at the park.

A Keystone beer can that was floating as I exited Redondo.
Pop tarts and gravy,
It's what's for breakfast.

Haven't dove since Feb, Skiing has taken precedence. But the last time I did dive I removed this nasty thing.

Not much trash underwater at Jorstad the other day. I'm committed to 2 pieces of trash per dive (at least). Usually end up with my entire goody bag full by the end of most dives. Been trying to also pick up at least a couple of pieces of trash on the surface intervals as well although usually I don't spend much time looking for stuff. Since there wasn't anything underwater the other day I picked up a couple pieces of glass, an O-ring, a moisture muncher, piece of zip tie, and a couple of unidentified candy wrappers on the beach, the trail, and around my car.

Last dive was at Les Davis. I picked up a bit of trash from the parking lot, nothing from the water. I’ll be on the Oregon coast this weekend; I’ll see what I can find.

Les Davis on Saturday, we picked up half a dozen derelict fishing lures, one pyramid-shaped fishing weight, and I found a bright blue plastic cup that I brought in and disposed of. Sunday at Fox Island Bridge, it was just a matter of navigation and survival, so nothing picked up there.
