DSLR to P&S
Well, I finally got my DSLR (Canon 5d MKII) rig put together. My first dive with the setup was to fine-tune buoyancy and get the feel of shooting a DSLR. Lundy joined me (last Saturday) to get me pointed in the right direction. The results on the first dive were okay, I had a setting on my lens in the incorrect position which prevented me from getting really close. My first dive yielded one shot I really liked.
Last night I took my rig out for my first official DSLR photo dive. I was fairly pleased with the results, but I feel I have a long way to go. Moving from a DSLR has proven to be a tough challenge. I am now focused on getting the shot in focus. Hopefully, the artistic side will come soon :-)
The first 4 photos in this gallery were shot last night. These are all uncropped photos.
I even took my new rig to Chicago this week for some top-side practice :-)
The first 12 shots in this gallery were taken with the DSLR.
Although the transition has been challenging. Especially since I did not have a lot of DSLR experience. I am enjoying the results so far. The next step in Wide Angle, yikes!

Wow -- that's a pretty amazing collection of shots for a brand new camera!
BTW, isn't Scott great as a photo coach?

Really nice Jesse - the gear is less important than the skillz of the person using it. You gots the skillz, it shows!

Wow Jesse, your camera takes really nice pictures!!!
Nice work. The first squid shot is absolutely stellar -- a contest winner imho.

Thanks for your help and the compliments. The thing I love about that first shot is the fact that i didn't crop it. Shoot, I spent all of three minutes converting the RAW image to a JPEG. I also like the depth in the second squid shot. It looks 3D. Okay, enough BS and post your damn g-six photos. That is my bad-ass slang for the six-gill

I have that lens and love it--but only for topside. I'm still a PnS gal underwater. Keep up the good work!Scubie Doo wrote:Thanks.enchantmentdivi wrote:NICE!!!

Both of the squid shots are awesome. You just can't beat a large ccd camera with a quality macro lens for those awesome closeup shots.

From one photog to another, the focus on those shots is perfect! I know how small that field of focus really is underwater, especially with a moving subject!!
Re: DSLR to P&S

It is a very nice lens. The Chicago (top-side) shots were taken with a Canon - 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultrawide Zoom Lens.enchantmentdivi wrote:I have that lens and love it--but only for topside. I'm still a PnS gal underwater. Keep up the good work!Scubie Doo wrote:Thanks.enchantmentdivi wrote:NICE!!!

This thread and others are going to be responsible for a ton of coin spent on camera gear.Scubie Doo wrote:DO IT! When are we diving again dude?cardiver wrote:Damn you, Jesse! Time to pull the trigger on a Canon DSLR........
