Fish ID Needed

Post by dwashbur »

We spotted a school of these little guys in the shallows at Three Tree just before we descended, and can't seem to figure out what they are with the books we have. Help?

Kathy got a really good pic. Here it is raw:

And here it is with some Photoshopping to try and lift out the fish:

This is NOT an "official" ID - but they look like Salmon smolts to me.

The reason I thought Salmon smolts was because of the bars and the shape of the tail. Herring don't typically have those characteristics.

They might be young sea-run cutthroat trout, which I've heard from a fisherman buddy are starting to "run" right now.

Yep Salmon smelts, Saw them in the shallows at Redondo friday night although if there were more than a few I couldn't swear to it cause the viz was to rotten to see more than a couple of feet past my nose.

Here's a pic Janna posted when I asked about something similar awhile back:

They are salmon parr, the stage before they become smolt. The vertical bars are called "parr marks". Google salmon parr and you will find many images like yours. A great sighting, Congratulations.
