Jan: Do you know where this was filmed? It looks like Alaska.

Happy to be alive.
Re: Where Lingcod live
Unfortunately they don't mention where it was filmed.
And I thought till now that Edmonds and Keystone had lot of Lings.
Looking at the amount of ambient light, it wasn't all that deep. Maybe one of the Alaska seamounts ?

WOW!!! That is a LOT more Lingcod that I have EVER seen in any one place! Absolutely astonishing!
For those of you without a lot of patience, the lingcod footage starts about 6 minutes in and just keeps getting better!

Are the huge swarms of smaller fish juvenile rockfish?

Re: Where Lingcod live
I thought one that showed up close to the camera looked like a Puget Sound rockfish, which only get to 6" or so. But certainly could have been juvies of some other rockfish.
Re: Where Lingcod live
that is so amazing! I'm wondering if that's a seasonal gathering for mating or something. Many of them seem to be gravid females. In a way I'm really glad they didn't give a location. It would just lead to some greedy bugger coming in and wiping out the whole bunch. We see amazing things there but others would only see dollar signs. I would however love to have a general idea like say maybe the southern gulf of Alaska? What cracks me up is it's supposed to be a training film about Halibut but there are only a couple of halibut segments.

Re: Where Lingcod live
I have a dvd with video shot about 15 miles or so off Sitka on an ocean pinnacle, 130-160fsw, protected (I believe), that looks way similar to this. It can only be dived when the weather is good and conditions permit - you are a long ways from anywhere and if the poop hits the fan help is a long ways away.
There are Huge ling cod, stacked like cordwood, laying on the rock among plumose and pink hydrocoral, with 100' viz and the sides of the pinnacle dropping off into inky blackness. Diver Dave on this board is in the video, and it was shot by one of his friends/aquaintances.
One of the few things that pull me toward a tech cert or two.

Thanks Tom for the info. Just amazing that there can be such density of predators.
