Re: Open ROV Project
How totally cool. How long do you expect on battery charge?

You are doing good progress. Thanks for posting. It is a great tool for watching stuff without getting wet.
I can see myself sitting on the jetty watching the Whidbey Critters do their shenanigans without me getting cold or
running low on air...
Keep up the good work !

Seriously cool stuff there, Laura… I could see it as a whole new way of kayak cyber-diving!

Jim, yes, as they bring the iPad controller via a little battery powered wireless hub online (its about 3/4 done), my hope is exactly that when it comes to exploring areas that are not as readily accessible to scuba divers. It will be so cool to be able to kayak around, drop it in and do quick seastar surveys pretty much anywhere which should increase our understanding of its progression and hopefully recovery. Another opportunity is CSO's (combined storm/sewer outfalls) which i won't dive around during a rain storm, but could easily float around above in a kayak and drop the little ROV in to get images. Being able to show images of both storm drains and CSO's to random folks walking along the waterfront is a HUGE opportunity for outreach. Another neat project I'm helping get started down at the Environmental Science Center in Burian will be a build with their after school students and then documentation of the changes in the near shore following the massive shoreline restoration project.
I think peoples success with build-it-yourself stuff like this is not so much in the 'build' but what are you going to use it for... If (like me) you have a host of small projects that could be expanded dramatically by involving people who are not actually scuba divers, it makes a huge amount of sense, and the motivation to make it work is high.

I'm just seeing solid black rectangles where you say you have posted images. New problem for me.
How are you uploading?

The only box you have to think outside of is the one you build around yourself.
Re: Open ROV Project
Except for one image, they are vimeo videos... possibly a plug in issue? showing up as normal on my computer....

Re: Open ROV Project
a more robust unit that is much easier to assemble. ESC's are already on the board and programmed, etc...
