Deception Pass Dive Feb 2008

Post by nwscubamom »

The currents were gorgeous last weekend and allowed me to finally do one of my dream dives - Deception Pass! I can't tell you how many times I've stood up on that bridge looking down and wondering what kind of critters dwell in that hugely current swept area. Conditions were perfect and allowed an hour-long dive with minimal, if any, current. And wow, it was amazing!! We went on Whateveh's boat and with an easy backroll into the water, the dive began!

Here's a few photos, and then a link for more after:

Congratulations Janna! Nice pics. I was actually up at Deception Pass this weekend (rock climbing not diving however) and noticed the mild conditions. I've done this dive a couple of times and it's one of my favorites as well.

Janna,
Thank you for sharing your report and pictures. They are wonderful. I want to do this dive SOOOOOOO bad. I dream about taking vacations to do nothing else but explore that area.

Hey Frank, how did your dive go?? Sorry, forgot to leave my JANNA WUZ HERE note for you attached to the feather dusters...Jan, you would have seen the note too!

Did either of you guys get some pics you could share with us?

Jan, I am jealous about your Basket Star encounters - hopefully we'll see a nice art creation centered around those guys!

I got some, but still redoing my downloading process (Photos still on cards - haven't viewed them yet), with Lightroom... so should have some this weekend... Between the DAM Book and Lightroom, I'm surpised i get anything done at all - LOL or COL (Crying Out Loud)
Pretty mellow dive... and that was a good thing...

Okay Jan - you've really outdone yourself this time. One of the things I love about diving the part of Deception Pass (Whidbey side) that we covered on Sunday is the structure. Your picture captures one particular spot EXACTLY. The area with the pinnacles that look as though they've broken away from the main wall and are falling away into the pass is really cool. When you dive there on a day with a much shorter slack the current swirls around those pinnacles - it is fun fun fun! Sunday really was special - the longest slack that I've ever had the opportunity to dive in the pass - I am so glad that you and Tyler could come along - I really feel like we got maximum value out of that dive. And I finally got Janna to see the place too (on Saturday)! It was a very busy weekend for me but getting to spend the time diving with some of the very finest underwater folks was just so rewarding. Thank you Janna and Jan for sharing your photos. Janna got an awesome shot of a Granulated Claw Crab - I see them there all the time but they're always back in crevices that I just can't seem to get to with my bulky camera. Here are some of my photos if anyone is interested:

Sunday with Jan and Tyler (Brandon driving)...

Hi Frank - I've admired your photos many times but I don't think we've ever met. Had I known you were on the charter on Sunday I might've hollered a hello.

Heyya Pete,
As you said, haven't met formally, but thougth I recognized you from somewhere else.. probably another dive site.. heheh.. hard to tell, everyone dressed up in black rubber suits... geesh, we all look alike...

Great photos you've got there (website)...
The Grunts are great and I've always like the Wide angle - views of what the diver sees as far as reef structures go... not just the small macro stuff....

Great shots...

Yah, coffee... a diver's bad nightmare on a long cold water dive...heheh...
