Not to start any speculation rants but does anyone have any factual info on this tragedy. It seems both news articles have errors though its the only info I could find at the moment.

Diver Drowns off Steilacoom
Re: Diver Drowns off Steilacoom
Looks like they've changed it from "about 1,000 feet below the surface" to "about 1,000 feet off shore at a depth of between 70 and 80 feet".

Just gotta love the 1000 feet below the surface thing. Sheesh!! Ah, the joys of the media.
Sorry, I have seen no other info about this. It has been awhile since anyone died there. (thankfully) My thoughts are with the surviving family members and friends of this man.
They had to be out quite a long ways in order to get to 70-80 feet depth. That's about the max depth I've ever been to out there along the pipeline, and that's pushing the turnaround pressure. If you had to make a direct ascent out there, it would be a LONG surface swim back. :(

Re: Diver Drowns off Steilacoom
Yeah, my wife woke me this morning after catching a glimps of the story on the news. She said, "They said it was someone at 1,000 feet below at Sunnyside, and that just doesn't sound right" So I log on here and it is cleared up right here. Thanks nwdiveclub!
My heart goes out to any family members of the diver who lost his life. It is always sad to here of this sort of accident so close to home and at a site that is so easy to dive. But I guess 70 to 80 feet is the same as 70 to 80 feet at any other non current sensitive dive. I just hope we get more info here so we can all learn from this incident and become better divers.
