Nootka Sound Diving???

Post by Seaslave »

I will be traveling to Nootka Sound on the West side of Vancouver Island the end of this month for an awesome Salmon/Halibut fishing trip. :supz: So I thought I'd take a few tanks. Has anyone dove over there? I will be in the sound staying at Critter Cove, not up in Tahsis. Any info would be helpfull. Thanks.

Thanks for the posts John. I can't wait to go. Have you or anyone else dove anywhere south of Tahsis? I will towing my boat to Gold River and running out to a place called Critter Cove Resort. It's just west of Hoiss Pt. on Eliza Channel. It's a fishing trip so that's what I'll mostly be doing, but I'm taking my gear and should be able to squeeze in a few dives. I'm just not sure where to go. I'm hoping the folks at the resort can help me out but it is primarally a fishing resort so I'm not sure how many divers if any they get and what kind of advice they can provide along the way of dive sites.

Hello Mathue,

We haven't done any serious exploring down in that part of the Sound but have taken a group of seaweed researchers down that way for a couple years now and they say the diving is great, but then again they are looking for seaweed. I would think that anything down around the Spanish Pilot Group and Bligh Island should have a lot of fish.

If you need anything while you're in our part of the world give us a call. We stand by on VHF channel 6.

Cheers,

Scott

Thanks Scott. I've got those spots circled on my chart. Is Ch. 6 a pretty common talk about channel over there, Safe for boat to boat banter? I'll give you a call if I need anything. How far are you from Critter Cove? Are you guys the only folks around with a good air compressor? I am bringing four of my tanks full but for future trips it would be nice not to pack so many.

Hello Mathue,

Channel 6 is the channel used boat to boat but if the conversation goes on for long most folks usually swith to channel 10 or 68.

We are about 35-40 minutes from Cougar Creek (just across the inlet from Critter Cove) by car and it kind'a depends on the boat when coming by water, but probably about the same.

As far as I know we are the only place in the Sound who has a compressor. We also have Nitrox.

Hope to meet you one day!
