Camano Is. Dives?

Post by Seth T. »

Hello all, I'm new to the forums. I've recently moved to Stanwood and am wondering where there might be some good shore dives around Camino Island? I've been to the Coves, Edmonds, and Mukilteo more times than I can count, so I'd really like a new place. Any thoughts?

I've only dived it from a boat, but there is an artificial reef ("fish haven")off of Onamac Point (Not a tribal word....it's just "Camano" spelled backwards!). It is a huge pile of boulders, rubble and cement culverts covered with anemones and other life. I've often wondered if you could get to it from shore because there seems to be quite a bit of beach there.

You could probably drive to the beach in an "El Camino!" :rr: (sorry)

I saw the biggest Ling Cod in my life at the Onamac Point reef years ago. She was absolutely colossal. Although it's been a few years since I've dived there, every time I've been there we've been the only ones around - diving OR fishing.

Those of you that have dove Onamac Point, how far off the shore does the boat drop you off? Would it be a deadly far surface swim if I go from the shore?

I've never seen it from the shore, and never planned on a shore swim there so I didn't pay a lot of attention to the distance. As I recall, though, (and it's been years since I've dived it), it seemed like it might be a helluva swim.....perhaps greater than the Edmonds Oil Pier. There used to be a can float attached to the reef. If it's been maintained in place you should be able to see it from shore and make a good estimate of the distance.

Pick up a nautical chart of that area and look for an area just off Onamac Point labeled as "fish haven". You should be able to extrapolate the distance from shore on an accurate chart.

The nearest roads according to Mapquest are Onamac Way and S Admiralty Way. I'm always on the lookout for new shore dive sites, I may put it on my list and take a drive up there and see if there's any public access from shore.

I plan on driving by there tonight on my way to the state park for a night dive. I'll let you know what I find. If it's accessible, let's hit it up next week!

Sure, I love the adventure of exploring unknown sites. Provided there is public access.

P.S. What state park are you referring to?

That would have to be (what else?) Camano Island State Park. How is it for diving?

From the arial photo it looks like you can drive right to the beach. There appears to be a boat launch there.

Yes, it looks like it, but it is gated and most likely a "private" beach. Virtually every inch of beach on the island is privately owned. :angryfire:

I've driven by and it is chained off and a long walk, looks like a better boat dive.

Oh seth .... your not new? youve just been absent from the board.. I have dove camano Is state Park. Its all mud and Silt bottom. Kayak Piont. There is a boat launch there and camping..etc..etc... The boat launch is the only intersting thing there as there is junk from boats going in and not coming out.

Hehehe Chris, Sheahan revived an old thread started by Seth T. He's been absent for some time now. I wonder if he's still around? :dontknow:
