April 24-27th Nootka Sound Sea Fans

Post by fpoole »

ADU has put together an expedition to Nootka Sound -
April 24-27th

For a study of the gorgonian sea fans and to collect data on resident species at Mozino Point (about 20 minutes from Tahsis by boat). Data collected will be used by the local dive community in their conservation efforts to protect resident populations and establish future protection of the gorgonians in BC. Space is limited on the trip, with 6-8 spots currently available for divers wanting to assist.

ADU will be working closely with Tahtsa Dive Charters in Tahsis for trip and dive logistics.

Tahtsa Dive Charters have come up with a very reasonable price for the expedition in Tahsis, covering the cost of accommodations, most of the food, and boat diving with air fills. $499 (for divers), $375 (non diver in boat), $275 (non diver no boat) plus all applicable taxes. A $25 registration fee will also be charged to cover the cost of the research materials provided and other expenditures. Car pooling will also be organized in early February.

Divers rarely see these beautiful pink and red gorgonian sea fans, found sparsely along BC’s coast due to the depth they inhabit—ninety feet or more. Very few details are known about Nootka’s gorgonians, but we do know these particular residents at Mozino Point are in danger of destruction due to deep dragging nets from commercial fishing. Huge commercial prawn pots are another threat to this delicate cold-water coral species, flattening numerous fans in great square sections.

During this expedition our group will focus on the collection of data through observation, photography (wide angle & macro), video, and habitat mapping with measurements. This research will then be compiled into a report packet and available to researchers, government agencies, the media and anyone needing the information.

We will meet in Tahsis on Thursday, April 21 at Tahtsa Dive Charters, located at the end of the main road in town, next to the Government Dock. Owners, Jude and Scott Schooner, will be on hand to assist.

Diving will be on Friday and Saturday (2 per day). Sunday morning everyone will meet for breakfast and to discuss the weekend’s findings and suggestions about what can be done. Participants may depart for their return trip after the meeting in the early afternoon.
