Narced? You be the judge.

Post by cardiver »

I wasn't going to post this, but the more I look at the pic the funnier it is.
Yesterday morning, Keith and I met at TTN for a 0800 dive down to the bottle field. We went down to 116' and hung out for a few minutes just looking around for anything interesting. As we started to ascend I notice a cool little baby red octo so I thought that I would get a few shots. I was amazed at how photogenic he was as he just sat still and let me snap away......
See pic below.

LOL!

awesome example!

I stopped diving air to 100' when i plugged both my light heads into each other (when doing the switch from primary to video lights) and then wondered why my video lights wouldn't fire. I figured it out after a few seconds, but just the fact that i did it clued me into my own impairment. it was an "honest mistake" that could happen to "anyone" but not one i've ever done shallower or on helium.

Whilst we're on this subject....
Is there any data suggesting that divers who 'occasionally to regularly' drink alcohol to the point of 'over the legal limit to drive' are less succeptable to nitrogen narcosis?

(Perhaps this should be split to a new thread?)

I've always wondered something similar, I know people are affected differently depending on blah blah blah....

In 200+ dives I never felt anything remotely like narcosis with many dives into the 135-ish range on air (don't start) then on a dive acouple weeks ago at lobster shop wall we dropped down to the wall, went down to about 125-ish and I thought, Wow, I feel buzzed, like I've been drinking... REALLY drinking, :partyman: This is what narced feel's like...

Anyway, was wondering why it hit me on that dive after so many, the dive after on at the same place I felt it a little bit and the last deep dive not at all... Maybe just something I ate? not enough exercise? Any Idea's?

Something I'm interested in hearing others thoughts on. :tomnic:

maybe you've just crossed the threshold to the more 'self aware' diver... it'll be interesting how you feel on next 20 dives :)

I've thought about that honestly, but I don't think thats it. I was always "looking" for it, waiting for the effects so I could see for myself what the narcosis thing was all about, I've always been self aware when diving (ya, I know, we all say that) It just never came up..

Maybe 10 years of Yoga and meditation? To stupid to feel it? :angelblue:

It's not an octo??? Maybe I better put this beer back in the fridge. :partyman:

It affects different people in different ways and the same person differently on different days. Some times you may be impaired and not even feel it as in taking along time to write something out or perform a task. Other days it could be a buzz like you felt and then again it could be a bad narc anywhere from mild nervousness to full on panic. The depths also vary allot. While you might dive repeatedly to 135 and not feel impaired on another day you might feel a buzz after a few minutes at 90 to a 100'

I'm no expert on the why's or wherefores but I know that it happens.

Hilarious. I've done the opposite and thought that something was a pretty purple rock until it moved and freaked me out.

Narced, no way. Jeff and I found one of these guys last night at Redondo. I looked it up on Wikipedia and it appears to be an Enteroctopus mineralus. They are an invasive species brought into Puget Sound by drunken boaters.

Is it narcosis when your whole face feels numb and you have to keep reaching up to make sure your regulator is still in your mouth?
